Memorial to Kim Lucas

Kim Lucas Obituary

When Kim joined the club in 1993 he was riding an Royal Enfield Bullet, having got back to biking after about 15 years lay off due to the arrival of his boys Darren and Phil.

Often with his wife Sue on the pillion, Kim seemed able to get the Royal Enfield flying along at a surprising rate of knots – every now and then the bike would complain about the sudden twist of the throttle to make an overtake with a huge cloud of black smoke .

Eventually came the day when the Royal Enfield had to go and Kim arrived one day at the club with a Honda 750. An early problem proved to be the exhaust and Kim and Sue arrived one Monday night with a nice new exhaust and a bike that sounded a bit throatier but grounded with a shower of sparks until the fit was adjusted!

Kim and family became an integral part of the club – whatever ride out or event, they were there – bonfire society activities permitting of course!!

You could always rely on them for support – this was recognised by the club when they were awarded the biker of the year as a family  - a unique award and symbolic of the way the club felt and still feels  about the Lucas family.

Now as time went on it came time for Kim to change bikes – this time he moved to a Suzuki 750 – brand new – a bike that Kim and Sue both loved and they covered many miles - often with the boys along as well.

Any biker who does serious miles with a pillion worries about their comfort and with this in mind the legendary Pan became Kim and Sue’s dream bike. Eventually another bike shuffle took place within the family with the Suzuki going to Phil and Phil’s 450 going to Darren. The Suzuki unfortunately met with the back of a car just north of Sheffield Park…..and the 450 – well that eventually just gave up on Darren. This shuffle of bikes allowed Kim and Sue to fulfil their ambition of owning the Pan – it really suited them both and they travelled far and wide.

Regrettably, as time went on, Kim started to struggle more and more with getting on and off the bike and talk started of about a trike – the nearest thing to motorcycling whilst not on 2 wheels and a long search began which ended with a swap for a VW powered trike. On the club rides – Kim would often set off first  to give himself more time to get to the venue – the bikes would invariably catch up at some point and we would think – just nip by Kim – not so easy – Kim was able to rattle along at seemingly incredible speeds bearing in mind he was on 3 wheels not on 2.  Sometimes he was actually on 2 wheels with either the front wheel in the air under acceleration or one of the back wheels as he went round corners at great speed with a massive grin on his face.

Kim will be greatly missed within the Club for the support he always gave but also for the humour he brought with him.
